Under general supervision, this position provides technical analysis and field investigations for engineering projects and operations related to electrical power facilities.

  • Review, investigate and develop appropriate recommendations regarding power systems including flow, short-circuit, protection/coordination, and arc-flash
  • Perform reviews of engineering designs and procedures on large industrial power systems
  • Perform scoping and trade-off studies for electrical systems supporting capital projects 
  • Provide support and perspective to senior engineers throughout the Company on applicable processes, practices, standards, and regulations
  • Contribute to the improvement of company operations including asset optimization, safety, troubleshooting and documentation of power systems 
  • Assist in developing standards and criteria regarding power system studies and system design
  • May contribute to site planning and budgeting efforts for electrical equipment and requirements
  • May represent the Company in committees, trade associations, and industry organizations related to area of expertise
  • May evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of engineering services
  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited Engineering program and three (3) years of related experience in Engineering, OR
  • Master’s degree in appropriate Engineering discipline and two (2) years of related experience in Engineering
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in the analysis of transmission and distribution systems
  • Knowledge of software: AutoCAD, SKM-PTW, ETAP, AcSELerator Quickset, Envervista
  • Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions
  • Able to scope and design studies, and then assist with equipment audits to verify or update all Engineering documentation
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (20-30%)
  • Ability to follow safety practices and recognizing hazards
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing



  • Advanced degree in Power Engineering or relevant discipline of Electrical Engineering
  • Classification as “Engineering in Training” (EIT) through successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  • Field experience in a utility or industrial environment working with electrical loads, switchgear, and/or substations
  • Bilingual in Spanish


  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as allowed by applicable State laws
